Student Suspended For Having Gun on School Trip

After taking prompt action last week, administrators at West Sabine Schools have placed a high school student in an alternative learning environment for having a pistol on a school-sponsored trip.

West Sabine Superintendent Mike Pate said in a telephone interview on Monday that he was notified immediately, and that quick action was taken by the unidentified school sponsor on the trip.

He emphasized that at no time was anyone in danger.

The pistol was in a container of snacks that had been packed for the trip.  A sponsor was feeling around in the box, felt something out of place, and found the pistol.  The sponsor took immediate possession of the weapon.

The high school student told school authorities during the investigation that he felt safer on the trip with the weapon because several students had seen a drug deal take place on the trip last year.  He was concerned the group would be staying at the same hotel again this year and felt the extra layer of security was necessary.

“This young man, who has always been an exemplary student, had a lapse in judgment and the investigation shows no malice or intent to do harm to anyone,” said Pate.

The incident took place on February 25 and the investigation began on Monday, March 1 after the return of the students.

The investigation, which included the student, parents and administrators, was concluded on March 2 and found that while the student violated policy, the intent was never to harm anyone.

Pate said that regardless of intent, the District is required to suspend the student and place him in an alternative learning environment.
