Today is the last day for anyone desiring to run in local non-partisan elections to sign up.

There are several school board, city council and hospital district elections that will take place on May 8.

Candidates filing so far are:

Incumbent Hemphill Mayor Robert Hamilton has also filed for re-election and will face challenger Rhoda Berry for the city’s top job.’

Place 4 incumbent Lee M. Dutton, Jr. has filed for another term and as of Friday had no opponent.

West Sabine ISD school board will have contested races in both positions up for election.  Place 3 incumbent Brenda J. Kilgore will face challenger Kenneth “Ken” Love Smith.  Place 4 incumbent Scott Hardy will face three challengers who have thrown their hats into the political ring.  Rayford Welch, Tommy Mason and Bobby Lacy have all filed to challenge for the position.

Contact has not been made with the City of San Augustine to determine if any candidates have filed for the San Augustine City Council.

Likewise, no recent contact has been made concerning the Broaddus City Council positions up for election for the at-large positions currently held by Laura Williams, Donald Murray and Shirley Parker.

All three incumbents on the Hemphill school board have filed for re-election.  Stephen Crowell has filed for Position 1, Lloyd Ford for Position 2 and Tom Beall for Position 3, with no challengers.

Phone calls were too late on Friday to determine if candidates have filed for the two positions open on the Broaddus school board currently held by Melinda Smith in Position 2 and Doug Sowell in Position 6.

As of Friday, Richard Barnett has filed for re-election to the At Large position on the Sabine County Hospital District Board of Directors.  The Precinct 1 position currently held by Phil Yocom and Precinct 3 held by Dr. Lana Comeaux have not see any filings.
