Woman Hangs Self in San Augustine Jail

A woman arrested in San Augustine on Saturday was found hanged in her cell Sunday evening, according to information provided by the San Augustine County Sheriff’s Department.

Sonya Seevers Sheffield, age 21, was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Anderson County for Credit/Debit Card Abuse and was being held under a $50,000 bond.

A spokesperson said that Sheffield never displayed any indication of mental health issues or exhibited a tendency for suicide and that she had no other arrest history.

A jailer was making routine rounds at approximately 7:30PM, Sunday, February 28 when Sheffield was discovered in her cellblock with a standard issue bath towel looped around her neck and hanging from a vertical metal partition support.

The jailer immediately unlocked the cell and found Sheffield unconscious with a pulse, but not breathing.  The jailer began resuscitation efforts and used an external defibrillator until the ambulance arrived.

Sheffield was then taken to San Augustine Memorial Hospital and then transferred by helicopter to Lufkin Memorial Hospital where she died at 1:10AM Monday.

A preliminary investigation by Texas Ranger Pete Maskunas and the San Augustine County Sheriff’s Department indicate no foul play was involved and that all procedures were followed.
