The Hemphill Youth Football league met Thursday night to close out the previous season and discuss the upcoming season.
Meeting with the Hemphill League was a league representative from the Shelby County Football League. Hemphill Board Members and coaches were interested in changing Leagues due to the problems that have been encountered with the Jasper Football League.
Shelby County Football League addressed the board and their policies and rules were discussed. A unanimous vote was taken afterward to join their League.
The other teams in their League are Joaquin, Timpson, Tenaha, Center, and Shelbyville. All the games will be played in Shelbyville on the field owned by the League, unless a request is made to have a home game by any team as a fundraiser. These are scheduled at the beginning of the season with no changes in the schedule accepted throughout the season.
Every player gets at least seven plays or the game will be a forfeit. The president is at every game and play counts are made for each kid. Birth certificates are a requirement on every player at the beginning of the season, or the player cannot play. There also will be no team stacking. Center has four teams that are selected by a draft. Everything is done to make the game fair for everyone. Shelbyville won the championship this past year.
The Shelby County League offers flag football for 5-7 year olds, which is always a big hit and fun to watch.
Johnny Coulter volunteered head up the Flag Football for Hemphill. The 8-9 year olds will play peewee tackle football.
Charles Proctor will be the head coach for the PeeWees.
The 10, 11 and 12 year olds will play Junior tackle football. Rusty Allen will be the head coach for the Juniors. The player must play for the school that he is enrolled in.
Upon discussion and parent requests, exceptions for Pineland students was requested since the schools are in the same county.
Shelby County board members will be discussing this and will get back to the Hemphill League with their answer soon. Shelby County Football League gives $2000.00 scholarships for each school in their league to distribute.
All teams are encouraged to bring Cheerleaders. Hemphill will continue to have cheerleaders, which will be headed up by Sybil Coon, Kim Pitre, and Shonda Faver.
Other business saw Charles Proctor installed as Hemphill League President and Shelby County League representative. Anthony Page remained as Vice-President and was also voted in as Non-coaching Shelby County League Representative. Mykia Proctor will share secretary/treasurer duties with Karen Bennett. Board Members at Large will be Rusty Allen, Johnny Coulter, and Antonio Vasquez. Trainer/Videographer will be Karen Bennett and Equipment Manager will be Antonio Vasquez.
Signups for players and cheerleaders will begin in May. Entry fees for the new league will be $45.00 for Flag Football and $85.00 for tackle football. Insurance will be provided for all players as well as equipment. Payment plans are also offered if needed.
